Respite care is temporary in-home support arranged specifically to give primary family caregivers a break. When you are the person responsible for a parent with dementia, a spouse recovering from a stroke, or a family member with a disability, you also need time — for work, for appointments, for your own health, or simply to rest.
Sagewell provides in-home respite care across Alberta. A trained, background-checked caregiver comes to your home so the person you care for is safe, comfortable, and looked after — while you step away without worry.
Respite can be arranged for a few hours a week, full days, or extended blocks. For AHS-approved clients, respite care may be fully covered through the CDHCI program at $0 out of pocket.
Most family caregivers wait too long. If any of these feel familiar, it's time to arrange support.
You wake up tired and rarely feel rested, regardless of how much sleep you get.
Feeling resentful toward the person you care for, then guilty for feeling that way.
Missing your own appointments, skipping meals, or ignoring symptoms because there's no time.
You've stopped seeing friends or doing activities that used to matter to you.
Small frustrations are leading to bigger reactions — and you notice it but feel helpless.
Caregiving responsibilities are affecting your ability to work or keep other commitments.
"Taking a break doesn't mean you care less. It means you're making sure you can keep caring."— Sagewell Care Team
We offer both private and government-funded respite care across Alberta. Your options depend on whether the person you care for has been assessed by AHS.
For AHS-assessed individuals approved for home care funding. Sagewell is a CDHCI-authorized provider — the government pays us directly through Alberta Blue Cross. Your cost: $0. Requires an AHS assessment first.
No waitlist or AHS assessment required. Start as soon as 24–48 hours. Ideal for families who don't yet have AHS funding, or need hours beyond what AHS approves. Pay directly at market rates.
Caregivers matched for memory care — trained in dementia communication, wandering prevention, and calm redirection. Consistently assigned so the person you care for isn't confused by new faces.
